Frank, Contributing Writer According to a report published in a recent issue of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, researchers confirmed previous findings that firefighters are at greater-than-average risk for developing cancer, particularly multiple myeloma, a serious bone marrow cancer. Study authors listed a probable association between firefighting and non-Hodgkins lymphoma and prostate and testicular cancers, and classified eight additional cancers as having a possible association with firefighting.

With the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) EMS Cost Savings Calculator, in the form of an Excel spreadsheet, departments can enter the area and population covered, number of volunteers, salaries of area career personnel and similar information, and savings are automatically calculated.

The Volunteer and Combination Officer Section (VCOS) of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) published a report detailing the steps that fire departments need to take if they are thinking of transitioning from an all-volunteer to a combination department.

While no state received a grade of F, none received an A. More than 80 percent of the states earned poor or near-failing grades of C+ to D.

Frank, Contributing Writer The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the selection of Johns Hopkins University (JHU) to lead a consortium to study how the nation can best prepare for and respond to potential large-scale incidents and disasters. JHU will create the Center for the Study of High Consequence Event Preparedness to implement this work.
